This week I had the honor and privilege of interviewing Andrew Ramroop, Master Tailor of Savile Row, from his Caribbean home in Trinidad. In this intimate interview, Andrew reveals some of the quiet details and influences that helped to shape his life as an entrepreneur and gives some sage wisdom for future entrepreneurs, especially entrepreneurs of color, to adopt.
Andrew Ramroop arrived in UK from Trinidad in 1970 with a burning ambition of becoming a Savile Row tailor. He worked ferociously hard to fulfil that dream. Today, he owns and runs Maurice Sedwell on 19 Savile Row, making bespoke suits for customers around the world. He is also training a new generation of high quality bespoke tailors to ensure that Savile Row, one of London’s most famous streets, continues to epitomise the very best. Savile Row Academy
Andrew Ramroop may be one of the most highly sought after creative visionaries in London for his ultra-bespoke tailoring, but, as he shares with us, his “navel string is buried in Tunapuna.”
That’s why, at the peak of his career as one of the masters of Savile Row, the owner of legendary craftsman and teacher packed his bags and returned just over a year ago to his homeland, with a singular mission to teach the refined and intricate craftsmanship emblematic of his trade to 27 lucky apprentices as part of a resurgence in fashion design, creation and marketability in TT.
